Scented Jar Candles Add to Aroma And Decoration

It has become wildly popular to place scented jar candles around the home to both add to the décor as well as provide a subtle scent to the house. With many sizes, shapes and colors of scented jar candles available, there are going to be ones that meet the interior decorating needs of practically every home.

Home decorating uses include jars of every size, from small, half-pint jars up to quart and even a few larger. Candles inside canning-type jars, with a decorative ribbon around the lip and the lid in place are becoming very popular as decorations and as gifts. With a multitude of scents available, with the candle’s color often matching the aroma, scented jar candles are growing in use as gifts.

When buying scented jar candles there are a few things to look for to insure you get the best, and safest, you can get. First is the quality of the jar’s glass. One that is made of extremely thin glass may break when it is heated by burning the candle. Some of the cheaper jar candles may actually be made in glass that cannot be heated and if you like to burn candles, it may be best to just throw them away.

Wick Size And Placement Helps Candles Burn

Wicks inside of scented jar candles should be made of cotton and should be in the center of the candle to allow for even burning. You should also not light scented jar candles unless you can keep them lit long enough to burn across the entire top, about five hours for a one-quart candle. This prevents the center from melting down causing the wax to form on the outer edge and the candle to burn uneven.

Most scented jar candles come with a venting cap that should be used once the candle burns about one-third down. This cap is designed to help vent the air when a candle burns to reduce the amount of soot from the burning wick. If the candle wick is too long or the candle is burned without the metal vent cap, there will most likely be a build up of soot around the top of the candle jar.

The wick should be trimmed before each use and should only be between one-eighth and one-quarter inch long. Watch out for decorative materials on scented jar candles and any present near the top should be removed before lighting the wick.
