How Scented Candles Can Add To Your Decorative Touch

There are many reasons people like scented candles, and masking odors in the home is one of the least often cited. Usually, it is because they simply like the smell the candle gives off as it fills their home with the pleasant odor. Additionally, since scented candles are available in so many different containers and colors, their use as decorative items is also well known.

Many folks will use scented candles to add to the spirit of different holidays, believing the odors are another method of enhancing the holiday spirit. At Christmas time, it is not unusual to find people burning pine-scented candles, trying to bring in the smells of evergreen trees. Others may prefer the smell of cinnamon, another holiday favorite and the candles’ coloring of green for pine and red for cinnamon, adds to the decorative flare of the scented candles.

The candles also distribute the odors throughout the room naturally as they burn with the heat rising from the candle taking the smell with it. The size of the room and the size of the scented candles being burned will determine how well the odor is disseminated. For many larger rooms, candle lovers will use larger candles, perhaps a five-inch diameter pillar candle, with up to four, or even five, wicks to help spread the candle’s odor, quicker.

Small Candles Cover Smaller Areas

Smaller areas in the homes can be enhanced with smaller candles, with some creative folks able to mix multiple scented candles to create a unique scent. A person may light candles in their office that have the odor of vanilla and cherry, to create the aroma of cherry-vanilla. Or, instead of one larger candle, they may burn several small candles around the room to more evenly distribute the smell.

The type of scented candles being burned also affect the quality of the smells emanating from the area. Candles that are made with scented oils tend to be more lush with the aroma and last longer while those made with the crushed leaves of odorous plants will have what is often defined as a cheap smell to them. It usually is not as strong and may not last as long as the candle.

Regardless of the size and scent of scented candles being used, safety needs to be the prime concern. A candle accidentally tipped over can start a fire that will spread quickly throughout a home. A candle should never be left burning when unattended and under no circumstances should candle be allowed to burn when you go to sleep.
